How to Edit Mac Screen Recordings with Claude and MCP: Toads Preview Guide

Disclosure: I build Toads and Screen Index through StarterBuild. This article describes the documented MCP preview workflow. It does not announce a public release of that build.

Toads documents an MCP connection that lets Claude work with approved video projects on your Mac. The workflow is to connect the assistant, grant project access, request one edit, review it, and export. This preview guide applies to a compatible direct-download build. The Mac App Store edition does not include MCP.

Release status: The current development notes still mark the direct-download MCP build as unreleased. Use the Toads MCP page for current availability. The steps here describe the documented preview workflow. They do not mean that the public download includes this build today.

Key takeaways#

  • The edition matters. MCP belongs to the direct-download edition. Buying the Mac App Store app does not add assistant support.
  • Access is explicit. A connection, project access, and folder access are separate choices. Grant the access that your task needs.
  • Begin with one edit. A small trim gives you a clear result to review before a larger change.
  • Local editing and assistant privacy differ. Original recordings stay on the Mac. An assistant can send approved text or frames to its AI provider.
  • Feature requirements still apply. Toads requires macOS 15 or later. Automatic captions require macOS 26 or later and the relevant Apple Speech assets.

What MCP does in a video editing workflow#

Model Context Protocol, or MCP, connects an AI assistant to tools and data. In this workflow, Claude requests an action through the Toads connection. Toads applies the permitted action inside its Mac editor.

The useful result is an edit that you can inspect in the timeline. You can judge its timing, view the changed footage, and undo a change. The assistant does not replace your review of the finished video.

This guide follows the published Toads workflow and the product’s preview setup notes. It does not claim a measured time saving or universal compatibility with every MCP client.

What you need before connecting#

RequirementWhy it matters
A compatible direct-download Toads buildThe App Store edition excludes MCP.
Access to the preview build and its required licenseA public product page does not establish access to an unreleased build.
macOS 15 or laterThis is the base app requirement.
macOS 26+ and Apple Speech assets for automatic captionsCaption features have separate requirements.
A supported Claude installationThe product documents Claude Desktop and Claude Code setup paths.
A project with sample footageYou need a clear edit to evaluate.

If the current Toads download lacks AI assistants, use manual recording and editing instead. Review the current release details before purchasing specifically for MCP.

1. Open the correct Toads build#

Install the compatible direct-download build in Applications. Open Toads. Open a small project with sample content.

Open Settings, then AI assistants. If that section is absent, review the edition and build. The connection cannot add support to an incompatible app.

Use sample footage for the first connection. Avoid customer records, private messages, and other material that you do not intend to share with an assistant.

2. Connect Claude#

For Claude Desktop, choose Add to Claude in Toads Settings. Complete the extension installation flow. Start a new Claude conversation so the assistant can see the current tools.

For Claude Code, choose Connect in Toads Settings. Use the connection status to establish that the setup completed.

The current product page documents a Copy Settings route for other MCP apps. Compatibility depends on the client. A standard connection format does not establish that every client works with every tool.

Anthropic’s local MCP documentation explains desktop extensions. Organization policies can restrict available extensions.

3. Grant access to one project#

Start with a request that only reads a project summary. For example:

Show the available project information. Do not change the video.

Review the request in Toads. Approve the connection and the intended project. Choose folders separately for any source files or exports that the task needs.

Limit the first task to one sample project. Broader folder access is unnecessary for a simple trim. Screen recording also needs separate permission.

4. Request one small edit#

Use a precise change that you can judge. For example:

Remove the empty opening before the first useful action. Keep the spoken introduction and the final result.

Ask the assistant to explain its proposed change first if the intended cut is ambiguous. Evaluate the timing in Toads after the edit.

A timeline change can alter the meaning of a demonstration. Keep the steps that explain how the product reaches its result. If the edit removes useful context, undo it and narrow the request.

5. Review captions and emphasis separately#

If your Mac meets the feature requirements, request captions. Review names, product terms, and any words that affect the meaning.

For emphasis, identify the control that matters. A useful request describes the action and the part of the video where it occurs. Avoid a vague request to make the entire video more exciting.

Review each change before adding more work. This process makes the source of a mistake easier to identify.

6. Export a review file#

Approve an export folder for the project. Choose a supported output such as MP4. Request a review export with a clear filename.

Open the file outside Toads. Evaluate the picture, cuts, audio, and captions from beginning to end. Publish only the result that you reviewed.

Toads documents MP4, MOV, and GIF outputs, with movie export up to 4K at 60 fps. Choose the format and size that your destination needs.

What stays local, and what an assistant can receive#

Toads keeps original recordings on your Mac. The assistant connection can expose permitted project information, such as transcripts, frames, filenames, and notes. The assistant can send that information to its AI provider.

These are separate boundaries. Local video files do not make the assistant conversation entirely local. Review the assistant’s privacy terms and the permissions that you grant.
